Low on Fuel in Bali: A Safe Plan

What to do before the tank reaches empty: choose a reachable station, assess Pertamini sellers, avoid wasting range in queues and switch to a private driver when the trip matters.

The useful part, first

When the gauge is low, preserve range: pick one reachable verified option, save a backup and remove uncertain refuelling from fixed trips.

In this guide

01

Stop treating the warning light as spare time

Once the gauge is low, your job is not to find the cheapest fuel. It is to reach one credible option without getting stranded or burning the remaining range in a queue. Cancel detours and identify two stations in the same direction.

Do not rely on a universal number of kilometres after the warning light. Vehicle, slope, traffic, load and gauge accuracy change it. Use the rental's instructions or manual, then leave a margin.

02

Choose the reachable station, not the greenest marker

Turn on Available, select your fuel and inspect the queue. A slightly farther station with no wait may consume less fuel than idling beside a closer one for an hour, but only choose it if the route stays safely inside your remaining range.

Save the pin for a second station before leaving. Reports can expire while you travel, particularly when a fresh delivery draws a sudden line.

03

Use Pertamini as a deliberate fallback

Turn on Mini to see small community sellers. Because they normally do not have a station queue, the map does not attach a waiting-time badge to them. Check that Available is also on if you only want sellers with a current positive report.

At the seller, confirm the product and price before filling. If the fuel is unlabelled, the container looks contaminated, or the seller cannot tell you the grade, do not make an uncertain purchase for a sensitive engine.

04

If the vehicle stops, move people out of traffic

Do not push a scooter or stand beside a car in a live lane unless it is the only way out of immediate danger. Switch on hazard lights where available, move to a visible safe edge, and contact the rental company or roadside support named in your agreement.

Send your live location, vehicle details and a photo of the surroundings. Do not leave a rented vehicle unattended unless the owner or police gives clear instructions.

05

Protect fixed trips from the fuel search

An airport departure, clinic visit, wedding or paid tour should not depend on finding petrol on the way. If your own vehicle is low, leave it safely parked and arrange transport that has already confirmed fuel and pickup time.

A private driver can also cover the route as a local guide, wait between stops and adjust the itinerary around congestion. Confirm the total price, hours, route, waiting time, parking and fuel inclusion in writing before pickup.

06

The two-minute decision

Before moving, answer five questions: correct fuel, recent report, reachable distance, tolerable queue and backup station. If any answer is no, do not start a longer journey.

The shortage is a distribution problem, so conditions can improve unevenly. Recheck the map immediately before departure rather than relying on the screenshot or group message that helped you an hour ago.
