The useful part, first

The cheapest daily rate is irrelevant if the licence, bike condition, deposit and damage liability are unclear.

01

Keys do not confirm the right to drive a bike

Many rentals give the scooter according to the passport photo and do not ask to see a licence. In the event of an accident, the police, the insurer and the rental company will look at the documents, the helmet, the authorized driver and the terms of the contract.

First, check your legal right to ride and coverage. Only then compare the price. If there is no motorcycle category, a driver, taxi or motorbike taxi with a driver is a safe alternative.

02

What documents do I need?

The legal service of the Bali Public Prosecutor's Office indicates: the driver must have a local license or an International Driving Permit along with the national license. The category should allow you to drive a motorcycle, not just a car.

You also need documents for transport or a lease agreement, written permission of the owner for someone else's transport and a helmet. The fact that the rental did not ask for the right does not make the trip legal and does not guarantee the insurance coverage.

03

How much monthly rental costs in 2026

For a monthly rental, the ordinary local market is significantly cheaper than large full-service rental companies. A realistic starting point is 1–1.2 million IDR for an older Mio, Beat or Scoopy; 1.2–1.5 million for a well-kept Scoopy; and 1.4–1.7 million for a Vario or Lexi in normal condition. These are practical market benchmarks from listings and actual local deals, not an official price index.

An NMAX that is visibly used but mechanically sound can be found around 1.5 million IDR a month. A fresh NMAX or NMAX Neo in excellent condition is usually around 1.8–2.2 million. A brand-new NMAX Neo with zero mileage can occasionally appear near 2 million, but treat that as a strong deal rather than a guaranteed price.

For an XMAX, 3 million IDR is an unusually good deal; 3.5–4 million is a more realistic range for a bike in good or excellent condition. Quotes of 5–6 million are the upper full-service segment: check whether delivery, replacement, support and damage protection are included. GoTravela and Iron Rent are useful examples of commercial tariffs, but their upper figures should not be presented as the average private monthly market.

For 20–30 days, always ask for the monthly rate. Season, condition and rental term affect the final quote, and multiplying a daily rate by 30 can overstate the monthly price two or three times.

04

Where to find a bike and what to ask

Compare 3–5 rental companies in Google Maps near your area and check recent reviews, office photos and responses to complaints. A recommendation from your hotel or villa gives you an additional contact, but does not replace a written agreement.

For direct offers, use the Telegram groups Bali Bike Rental and Bali Bike & Car Rent. On Facebook, rental requests appear in Bali Bikes & Cars for sale, Canggu Community, Bali Second Hand Marketplace, Buy and Sell in Bali Free, and Buy and Sell in Bali (South) Free. These are search channels, not verified-rental lists: group admins do not confirm every seller, document or bike.

In your post, state the area, dates, exact model and monthly budget, and request a fresh video of the specific bike showing its plate and mileage. With a private owner or unknown rental, do not send a reservation prepayment. Inspect the exact bike, match the STNK and the contracting party’s identity, test-ride it, record its condition, and pay at handover. Urgency, a price far below the market and a deposit demanded before inspection are reasons to walk away.

Send every candidate the same questions: model, year, mileage, total price, delivery, deposit and refund terms, damage coverage and deductible, maximum liability, allowed riders and territory, breakdown assistance, two helmets, STNK and a written agreement.

05

Do not leave the original passport

Show your passport for identification, but do not leave the original as collateral. Choose a cash deposit, card pre-authorization or contract with an understandable limit of liability.

Passports are required for flights, immigration, and emergencies. When it is held by the rental company, the dispute about the scratch turns into a dispute about the return of the document.

One rental publishes a deposit of 2 million IDR for PCX/NMAX and 3 million for XMAX. This is an example of a specific company, not a mandatory tariff for the island.

06

A five-minute inspection before payment

Take a continuous video while the employee is around: both sides of the plastic, each scratch, wheels, tires, mirrors, brake levers, footrests, muffler, light, signal, mileage, fuel, licence plate, STNK, keys and both helmets.

Press both brakes: the handle should not fall down to the steering wheel. Check tread and tire cracks. On a short test, the bike should not pull sideways, vibrate, or stall.

Send the video to the chat: “This is the condition at handover, including the documented damage.” Ask for confirmation. Correspondence binds a record to a specific rental.

07

How an old scratch dispute arises

A recurring pattern reported by renters: the bike is handed over without a condition report, on return, staff inspect it more carefully, find an old scratch, quote a repair charge without an itemized estimate and pre-authorization a deposit or passport. This is not a statistic and does not mean that every claim is a fraud.

The actual damage is paid under the contract. The condition before the trip, the written liability cap and an itemized estimate help to distinguish it from the pressure. When returning, attend the inspection and shoot the final video.

08

What should be in the contract and what to do in case of an accident

Write down the dates and hours, model and licence plate, pre-existing damage, rental, deposit, delivery, late-return charge, coverage, exclusions, deductible, responsibility for keys and helmets, allowed drivers, territory, procedure for repair and refund of the deposit.

The word insurance without limit and exceptions does not guarantee anything. Coverage can disappear without the required licence, when riding without a helmet, transferring a bike to another person, intoxication or late accident reporting.

After the accident, check the people first. Photograph the road, transport, damage, licence plates and documents of the other party. Immediately write to the rental company and the insurer. Do not repair without written consent and do not promise an amount until the facts are clarified.

09

Compare the maximum risk, not the daily price

Scoopy is offered for 60 thousand IDR per day without a contract, STNK and inspection. Another rental asks for 100 thousand, provides the documents, records existing damage and limits liability in writing.

The difference for the week is 280 thousand IDR. One disputed panel or evacuation easily exceeds that saving. Before paying, compare not only the rate, but also the maximum amount you risk.
