How Bali Scams Actually Work — and How to Spot Them
Recognize the money-changer hand trick, fake villa landlord setup and payment signals that matter before you hand over cash.

The useful part, first
A real location is not proof of a legitimate deal: keep counted cash in your hands, and verify a villa owner or subletting right before paying a deposit.

01
The exchange booth tells you something before the rate does
A licensed non-bank money changer should display the Bank Indonesia authorized-money-changer logo, its BI licence certificate and the words “Authorized Money Changer” where customers can see them.
A bright, open counter is a useful positive signal. Treat frosted glass, a hidden counting area and a rate slightly better than nearby licensed counters as a combination of warnings, not as proof on its own.
The tempting rate gets you inside. The privacy then makes it harder for passers-by, companions or a camera to see what happens while a thick stack of rupiah is counted.
02
The hand trick happens after the money appears correct
The operator may count a large stack of small notes correctly, ask you to recount it, then touch or “tidy” the stack once more. Skilled hands can drop part of the bundle behind the counter without an obvious movement.
Make your count the final count. Once the total is correct, keep the rupiah in your own hands and put it straight into your wallet or bag. If staff touch the stack again, restart the count from zero.
Calculate the expected total before handing over foreign currency. Confirm the denomination, commission and final rupiah amount in writing, then keep the receipt and photograph the counter details.
03
A real villa and a real viewing do not prove the landlord is real
One recurring setup uses a genuine villa. The scammer books it for a few nights, copies the listing and offers it cheaply as a monthly or yearly rental. A viewing can look completely normal because the property is real.
Another version is even simpler: the scammer books a viewing with the real manager, then tells you that the manager works for them. You inspect the villa, sign a document and send a deposit to someone with no right to rent it.
The fraud appears only when the short booking ends or the real owner discovers the arrangement. A key, a viewing and a polished contract therefore prove access to the villa, not ownership or authority to sublet it.
04
Verify the person, the authority and the payment separately
For a long stay, view the property in person or send someone you trust. Reverse-search the photos and contact the villa through an independently found website, map listing or booking-platform profile.
Ask who owns the property and who will sign the lease. If you are dealing with a tenant or agent, ask to see the head lease and the clause allowing subletting — often described as boleh disewakan kembali.
Keep messages and payment inside the original platform when possible. For a large prepaid lease, use an Indonesian notary or PPAT to check the signer and documents before transferring the balance.
05
Price pressure is part of the mechanism
The exchange booth offers a slightly better rate. The fake landlord offers a real-looking villa below the normal monthly price. Both deals create the same thought: act now before someone else takes it.
Pause when a discount is paired with urgency, a new WhatsApp number, a different bank account, cryptocurrency, cash-only payment or a request to leave the platform where you found the listing.
Compare at least three nearby exchange rates or rental listings. A bargain that survives one day of independent verification is more useful than a bargain that disappears when you ask who receives the money.
06
Use a ten-minute stop before paying
At a money changer: find the BI licence markers, calculate the total, watch every count and never return the final stack. At a villa: verify the listing through another channel and verify the signer’s authority.
Save the advertisement, messages, receipt, bank details, contract and identity used by the seller. If the story changes during those ten minutes, do not negotiate with the red flag — leave the transaction.
